For me, abstract painting is the process of putting a mark of paint on a blank canvas, visually responding to that mark with another one, responding to those two marks with a third, and continuing this process with form and color until the whole canvas feels balanced. How do I know when the painting is finished? It’s done when I no longer see anything that needs changing.
Currently, I primarily do two kinds of abstracts. One is what I call Nonscapes, which are paintings that resemble landscapes to one degree or another but are not actually landscapes. They are nonscapes. The other kind of abstracts I do is paintings based on songs--melodies or lyrics of songs that mean something to me. Song paintings. Of course, some of my abstracts are just abstracts. Click on the thumbnails to see a larger image.
